The ZW-1/150 is a compact oil-free reciprocating piston hydrogen compressor designed for hydrogen cylinder filling service, delivering 1 m3/min at 15.0 MPa discharge pressure from a 30 kW, 380V explosion-proof motor. The 2-row 4-stage configuration divides the total compression ratio from near-atmospheric suction to 15.0 MPa into four progressive stages, maintaining controlled discharge temperatures at each stage and providing the thermal safety margin required for safe hydrogen compression at cylinder filling pressure. Anti-static belt drive, nitrogen-purged distance piece, and IEC Ex IIC T4 explosion-proof motor are standard equipment on every ZW-1/150, reflecting the specific safety requirements of hydrogen compression that do not apply to air, nitrogen, or oxygen compression.

Hydrogen compression demands a higher level of safety engineering than any other industrial gas compression application. Hydrogen has the lowest minimum ignition energy of any flammable gas - approximately 0.017 mJ, compared to 0.25 mJ for methane - and a flammability range of 4 to 75 percent by volume in air, the widest of any common industrial gas. Any ignition source in a hydrogen-enriched atmosphere, including electrostatic discharge from a standard V-belt, a spark from a standard motor, or a hot surface from an overheated compression stage, can cause ignition. The ZW-1/150 addresses each of these risks at the design level: anti-static belt eliminates electrostatic discharge, IIC T4 motor provides the highest level of explosion protection for the lowest surface temperature class, and 4-stage compression with individual stage temperature monitoring eliminates the risk of thermal ignition from overheated gas.

The nitrogen-purged distance piece between the cylinder and crankcase is a mandatory safety feature for hydrogen compression. Hydrogen molecules are small enough to diffuse through PTFE piston rod packings at a rate that, over time, would allow hydrogen to accumulate in the crankcase and mix with lubricating oil vapour - creating a flammable mixture in an enclosed space with potential ignition sources. The nitrogen purge maintains a positive nitrogen pressure in the distance piece, preventing hydrogen migration into the crankcase and venting any hydrogen that does pass the inner rod packing to the closed vent system rather than the crankcase.

Oil-free PTFE composite piston rings and rod packings are used throughout all four stages. The oil-free design is required not only for gas purity in the filled cylinder but also to eliminate the risk of oil contamination in a hydrogen stream, where oil vapour can form explosive mixtures with hydrogen under certain conditions. All gas-contact materials are selected for hydrogen compatibility - no copper alloys, no materials subject to hydrogen embrittlement at the operating pressures of the ZW-1/150, and no elastomers with high hydrogen permeability in sealing positions.

 

 

Application

Industrial hydrogen cylinder filling: Chemical plants, petrochemical facilities, and industrial gas companies producing hydrogen as a by-product or primary product require a reliable compressor to fill high-pressure cylinders for distribution to welding and cutting customers, laboratory users, and industrial consumers. The ZW-1/150 at 1 m3/min fills approximately 8 to 12 standard 40-litre hydrogen cylinders per hour, covering the filling requirement of a small industrial hydrogen supply operation.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle refuelling development: Early-stage hydrogen refuelling station development and pilot projects for fuel cell vehicle fleets require a compact, safe hydrogen compression system for cylinder filling or cascade storage charging. The ZW-1/150 provides the compression stage for small-scale hydrogen refuelling infrastructure development at 15 MPa, the first-stage pressure in a typical cascade refuelling system.

Safety Warning: Hydrogen is an extremely flammable gas with a wide flammability range of 4 to 75 percent by volume in air and a minimum ignition energy of 0.017 mJ. All electrical equipment in the hydrogen compressor installation must be rated IEC Ex IIC Zone 1 or better. Continuous hydrogen gas detection, forced ventilation, and automatic shutdown on gas detector alarm are mandatory. The nitrogen-purged distance piece vent must be connected to a safe outdoor vent point. Never operate this compressor with a standard V-belt - anti-static belt is mandatory. Follow all applicable national regulations for hydrogen compression and cylinder filling.
