The DW-20/40 is a medium-capacity skid-mounted carbon dioxide compressor delivering 20 m3/min at 4.0 MPa, driven by a 400 kW motor on 380V or 6kV/10kV supply. The 2-row 4-stage configuration divides the total compression ratio from suction to 4.0 MPa into four progressive stages, maintaining controlled discharge temperatures throughout the compression sequence and providing the thermal and mechanical reliability required for continuous CO2 process service. The skid-mounted package format delivers the compressor, interstage coolers, suction filter-separator, discharge separator, safety relief valves, and PLC control panel factory-assembled and factory-tested on a single structural steel baseframe, reducing site installation to utility connections and dramatically shortening project commissioning timelines.

CO2 at 4.0 MPa is above the critical pressure of carbon dioxide (7.38 MPa is the critical pressure, but at 4.0 MPa discharge the subsequent compression to supercritical conditions requires only a modest further pressure increase), making the DW-20/40 the correct first or intermediate stage compressor for supercritical CO2 extraction systems, CO2 liquefaction plants, and beverage carbonation gas supply systems. The 4-stage design keeps each stage discharge temperature within the limits required for CO2-compatible lubricants and valve materials, addressing the specific challenges of CO2 compression: absorption of CO2 into lubricating oil reducing viscosity, higher valve plate impact velocity from greater gas density, and the need for CO2 detector integration as a personnel safety measure in enclosed installations.

CO2-compatible synthetic lubricant is used in the cylinder lubrication system as standard. This lubricant is formulated with base stocks resistant to CO2 absorption under pressure, maintaining adequate viscosity at all four stage operating conditions throughout continuous duty. The lubricant specification is documented in the machine technical file and verified during factory acceptance testing by viscosity measurement at rated operating temperature before dispatch.

All four compression stages use valve designs optimised for CO2 service, with spring rates and seat materials selected for the higher impact velocity of CO2 valve plates compared to equivalent air compressor valves. Stage discharge temperature transmitters monitor all four stages continuously, with automatic shutdown relays providing independent thermal protection at each stage. A CO2 detector interface relay connects the compressor shutdown system to the site area CO2 monitoring network, automatically shutting down the compressor if room CO2 concentration exceeds the safe working level.

The skid package of the DW-20/40 includes a suction knockout drum sized for worst-case liquid CO2 carry-over scenarios, protecting the first-stage cylinder from hydraulic shock in applications where the CO2 source may contain liquid droplets. Interstage coolers between all four stages return the gas to near-ambient temperature before each subsequent stage, maximising compression efficiency and minimising the thermal load on downstream CO2 process equipment. The entire skid is pressure-tested to 1.5 times design pressure before dispatch, providing a single factory test certificate covering all process connections rather than requiring multiple field pressure tests after installation.

 

Application

Supercritical CO2 extraction plants: Supercritical CO2 extraction for decaffeination of coffee and tea, hop extraction for brewing, essential oil and fragrance extraction, pharmaceutical active ingredient isolation, and nutraceutical extraction all require CO2 compression to supercritical or near-supercritical conditions. The DW-20/40 at 4.0 MPa serves as the primary compression stage feeding a high-pressure extraction compressor, or as the sole compression stage for lower-pressure extraction processes operating at 8 to 12 MPa total system pressure with a single additional compression step.

CO2 liquefaction plants: Industrial CO2 liquefaction for cylinder filling and bulk liquid supply requires CO2 compressed to 6 to 8 MPa before condensation in a refrigerated liquefier. The DW-20/40 at 4.0 MPa serves as the first-stage compressor in a two-stage liquefaction train, handling the bulk of the total pressure ratio in a single skid-mounted package with the second-stage high-pressure compressor providing the final increment to liquefaction pressure.

Beverage carbonation gas supply: Large beverage manufacturers and CO2 distributors supplying food-grade CO2 for soft drink, beer, and sparkling water carbonation require CO2 at 6 to 10 MPa for liquefaction and distribution. The DW-20/40 covers the primary compression requirement of a medium-scale beverage CO2 supply facility, processing recovered or produced CO2 from fermentation, combustion, or chemical process sources.

Enhanced oil recovery injection: CO2 injection for enhanced oil recovery at onshore oil fields requires CO2 at wellhead injection pressure of 10 to 25 MPa. The DW-20/40 serves as the first-stage compression package in a multi-stage injection compression train, with its skid-mounted format particularly suited to the modular installation requirements of oil field compression facilities where site infrastructure is limited.

Carbon capture intermediate compression: Industrial carbon capture projects capturing CO2 from flue gas or process streams at near-atmospheric pressure require multiple compression stages to reach transportation or utilisation pressure. The DW-20/40 skid serves as an intermediate compression stage in a carbon capture compression train, raising CO2 from the output of a lower-pressure first-stage compressor to the suction pressure of a high-pressure pipeline injection machine.

Food and pharmaceutical CO2 processing: Food-grade CO2 for modified atmosphere packaging, carbonation, and freezing, and pharmaceutical-grade CO2 for aerosol propellant and medical applications, requires oil-free or ultra-low-oil compression with verified gas purity.
