Product Description

A jaw coupling is a type of general purpose power transmission coupling that also can be used in motion control (servo) applications. It is designed to transmit torque (by connecting two shafts) while damping system vibrations and accommodating misalignment, which protects other components from damage. Jaw couplings are composed of three parts: two metallic hubs and an elastomer insert called an element, but commonly referred to as a "spider". The three parts press fit together with a jaw from each hub fitted alternately with the lobes of the spider. Jaw coupling torque is transmitted through the elastomer lobes in compression.

Here are the main applications of jaw couplings:

  1. General Industrial Power Transmission:

    • Electric Motors to Pumps, Gearboxes, and Compressors: This is arguably the most widespread application. Jaw couplings are ideal for connecting standard electric motors to a wide range of driven equipment due to their ability to handle common misalignments, dampen vibrations, and provide reliable torque transmission.
    • Fans and Blowers: Used in HVAC systems, industrial ventilation, and drying processes where quiet operation and vibration dampening are beneficial.
    • Conveyor Systems: From manufacturing lines to material handling, jaw couplings ensure smooth and consistent power transfer in conveyor systems.
    • Mixers and Agitators: Connecting motors to mixing equipment in various industries, including food and beverage, chemical, and pharmaceutical, especially for light to medium-duty mixing.
  2. Light to Medium Duty Applications:

    • They are well-suited for applications that don't involve extremely high torque or severe shock loads, though stiffer spider materials can extend their range.
    • Common in general machinery where simplicity, reliability, and low maintenance are desired.
  3. Applications Requiring Vibration Dampening and Shock Absorption:

    • The elastomeric spider is excellent at absorbing shock loads and dampening torsional vibrations, which protects sensitive components (like bearings and seals) of both the driving and driven machinery from premature wear and extends their lifespan.
    • This makes them valuable in systems with pulsating loads or start/stop cycles.
  4. Applications with Minor Misalignment:

    • Jaw couplings can accommodate angular misalignment (shafts not perfectly parallel but intersecting), parallel misalignment (shafts parallel but offset), and axial misalignment (shafts moving along their axis).
    • While they offer good misalignment capacity, maintaining good alignment extends the life of the spider.
  5. Environments with Contaminants:

    • The design of jaw couplings, particularly the spider, allows them to operate reliably in environments exposed to dirt, dust, oil, moisture, and some chemicals, as there is no metal-to-metal contact during normal operation. This makes them "maintenance-free" in terms of lubrication.
  6. Fail-Safe Operation:

    • Many jaw couplings are considered "fail-safe." This means that if the elastomeric spider fails or wears out completely, the jaws of the two hubs will interlock directly, allowing power transmission to continue (albeit noisily and with increased wear). This can prevent critical system downtime and allows for scheduled replacement of the spider.
  7. Motion Control (Servo) Applications (with specific types):

    • While traditionally for power transmission, curved jaw couplings with very stiff urethane inserts can provide a zero-backlash fit. This makes them suitable for some precision motion control systems, especially those with start-and-stop movements where accuracy upon stopping is crucial (e.g., in machine vision systems or indexing applications).
  8. Electrically Isolating Applications:

    • The elastomeric spider acts as an electrical insulator between the two metal hubs, preventing the transfer of stray electrical currents between shafts. This can be important for safety or to prevent galvanic corrosion.
