The DW-85/8 is a large-scale oil-lubricated reciprocating piston nitrogen compressor delivering 85 m3/min at 0.80 MPa, driven by a 500 kW motor on 6kV or 10kV medium-voltage supply. The 2-row 2-stage horizontally opposed configuration provides inherent dynamic balance across both cylinder rows, minimising foundation vibration at the high power levels required for this output and reducing structural requirements for the compressor installation. At 13 tonnes and a footprint of 5456 x 3518 x 2535 mm, the DW-85/8 is a high-capacity single-train nitrogen compression solution for large chemical plants, steel mills, and industrial gas facilities requiring continuous nitrogen supply.

Nitrogen compression at the DW-85/8 scale is a continuous-duty application with no planned shutdowns between turnaround intervals. The oil-lubricated cylinder design provides long piston ring and valve service life, with planned maintenance intervals designed to align with plant turnaround schedules of 3 to 5 years. Water-cooled interstage and aftercoolers maintain stage discharge temperatures within design limits, protecting downstream nitrogen distribution equipment and extending the service life of sealing components.

The gas-tight piston rod sealing system on the DW-85/8 prevents nitrogen migration into the crankcase and eliminates nitrogen leakage to the surrounding environment. Nitrogen displaces oxygen and creates an asphyxiation hazard in enclosed spaces - gas-tight rod sealing with a closed vent system is therefore a mandatory safety feature on all large nitrogen compressors, and is standard equipment on the DW-85/8.

The control system includes suction and discharge pressure transmitters, interstage temperature sensors, lubricating oil pressure monitoring with automatic shutdown, PLC control panel with local HMI and remote SCADA interface via Modbus/RS485, automatic load-unload cycling, and integration with site nitrogen monitoring systems.

 

Application

Air separation plants - flexible output compression: Air separation units producing both gaseous nitrogen and gaseous oxygen for cylinder filling or pipeline supply require compression capacity that can follow product demand. When oxygen demand is high, the LW-30/30 operates in oxygen mode; when nitrogen demand peaks, it switches to nitrogen service. This flexibility allows an ASU operator to maximise revenue from a single compressor investment by following market demand rather than being locked into fixed production splits.

Industrial gas distributors - regional cylinder filling: Regional industrial gas distributors filling both nitrogen and oxygen cylinders for welding, cutting, and industrial use benefit from the LW-30/30 dual capability. A single LW-30/30 can fill nitrogen cylinders during morning and afternoon shifts when nitrogen demand is high, and switch to oxygen service for the evening shift when oxygen orders are prioritised, matching a single compressor to the variable daily demand pattern of a regional filling centre.

Chemical plants - inert gas and oxidant supply: Chemical synthesis plants requiring both nitrogen for inerting and reactor blanketing and oxygen for controlled oxidation reactions can use the LW-30/30 to cover both requirements from a single compression installation, switching service based on the current production schedule without the capital cost of two dedicated compressors.

Steel plants - auxiliary gas compression: Steel plants requiring nitrogen for annealing and inerting and oxygen for cutting and lance injection at flow rates in the 25 to 35 m3/min range can use the LW-30/30 to cover both auxiliary gas compression requirements, reducing the number of compressor installations in the auxiliary gas building.

Hospitals and medical gas facilities: Large hospital medical gas systems require both medical oxygen and medical nitrogen at sustained flow rates. The LW-30/30 dual configuration, combined with appropriate downstream purification to medical grade, covers the compression requirement of a hospital or medical gas supply facility serving a large healthcare campus.

Research and testing facilities: Industrial research centres and testing laboratories requiring both nitrogen and oxygen at 3.0 MPa for high-pressure reaction studies, materials testing, and process development find the LW-30/30 an economical solution, replacing two separate dedicated compressors with a single switchable machine.
